What is coaching?

Coaching is a co-constructed partnership between client and the coach. Within this partnership, the client takes the lead and the coach works alongside them to activate and draw out the wisdom they already have within. The client is the expert on their own life and the coach is there to reflect, support, and respectfully challenge. All interventions and “hunches” shared by the coach are invitational, and the client should feel empowered within the dynamic created to push back or reject without fear of judgment or repercussion.

For many of us, the pace of today’s world moves at a dizzying speed. We each hold multiple roles: child, parent, employee, boss, friend, lover, confidant, problem solver, comedian, empath...the list goes on and on. Everything has become instant, from tweets, to photos, to breaking news; it can be hard to quiet the noise and reconnect either with ourselves or others. When was the last time you sat in silence?

Can I benefit from coaching?

The Eight Guiding Ethical Principles of Coaching

Coaching Mindset

Essential to effective coaching, this core competency relates to the importance of reflexivity. Coaches should constantly be seeking methods to improve their abilities, stay open, and remember that the client is central to the process.

Agreements

This core competency relates to the importance of establishing and maintaining clear boundaries related to the work. This includes logistics, such as payment and other relevant policies, the boundaries of what coaching is able to address, and working with the client to ensure the goals and direction is authentic and desired by them.

Trust & Safety

Each client is a unique individual. As such, coaches must work to create an environment based on trust that encourages vulnerability and honesty.

Presence

This core competency relates to coaches establishing an open and flexible style that holds space for anything the client may bring with them into the session. Coaches should be able to respond creatively and transparently.

Active Listening

Relates to a coach's ability to listen beyond the words being offered by the client. Active listening requires attention to subtext, non verbal communication, and energetic shifts in order to fully appreciate the nature of the content being shared.

Ethical Practice

Ensures that coaches stay within the appropriate boundaries of coaching. This core competency asserts the importance of respect, integrity, confidentiality, sensitivity, and honesty in working with clients.

Awareness

This core competency relates to the ways in which a coach can amplify the learnings of a client through various tools. This includes reflecting back, asking questions, reframing, adjusting perspective, and sharing observations. All offerings must be shared without attachment, as the client ultimately knows what is best for them.

Growth

This competency relates to the active partnership of coach and client that moves the client toward tangible growth. The coach has various tools available, such as partnering to create goals, turtle steps, and other forms of accountability, to aid the client in their desired transformation being shared.
